Named after the film because of its vivid colors - Kodachrome Basin is a place where blue sky, billowing clouds, red rock, yellow flowers and green brush paint a portrait unique in its beauty. You'll find a wide choice of activities: easy hikes, difficult hikes, horseback riding, bouldering, climbing and more. Kodachrome Basin is a spectacle of massive sandstone chimneys, ever-changing from gray and white to shades of red with the day's mood. Numerous rocks and coves offer solitude, quiet and unique desert beauty.

Where to Stay.

Kodachrome Basin Cabins ($65 a night) also have horseback riding available and Utah State Parks have campgrounds ($14 a night) onsite. It's a 1 hour drive back to Bryce Canyon lodging if you just have time for a day trip.

Hiking Kodachrome Basin.

Although the park is small, it has some very scenic short hikes.

SHAKESPEARE ARCH. The Shakespeare Arch is a stone arch cut out of the surrounding redrock by years of erosion. The 1/2 mile loop (~100' elevation change) takes under an hour through desert vegetation and provides long views of the surrounding lands.

EAGLE VIEW TRAIL. The 1/2 mile up to the Eagle View Overlook is steep, 400-500' of elevation change. But, the view of the entire park and surrounding countryside is worth the effort. Plan 2 hours for the hike and site seeing.

The longest hike in the park is the Panorama Trail (3 miles) which can be combined with the Big Bear Geyser/Cool Cave Trail (2 miles) for a total 4-1/2 mile hike.
