Here's a fun adventure for anyone of any age. It's only 90 miles from either the resorts of Orlando or the beaches of the Tampa/St. Pete Florida Gulf. Crystal River, Florida provides an exceptional, but uncomplicated winter adventure opportunity. Take a day to swim, snorkel, or scuba in the crystal clear, spring-fed waters that are the winter home to one of Creation's unique (but endangered) creatures - the Manatee.

  • NOTE: Manatees spend the winter months in Crystal River. This adventure is best from mid-November to mid-March and makes a great "add-on" to any winter Florida trip.

Called mermaids by ancient mariners, the West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) is an endangered species. Each winter these 1,800 pound gentle giants travel from the oceans up Florida's inland rivers in search of warmer waters. Crystal River is one of the places they make their winter home. You can enjoy the company of manatee while helping to save it from extinction.

For FAQ's about manatees and what you can do to help it, visit: SaveTheManatee.Org

What to do: There are a number of guided snorkeling tours available for Crystal River and nearby Homosassa Springs. Crystal Lodge Dive Center, Manatee Safari, Manatee Dive & Tour, Sunshine River Tours are a few - call ahead for current times and rates. But at Crystal Lodge Dive Center, Manatee Dive & Tour and a number of other shops) you can rent a fishing boat for about $8 a hour and create your own adventure. Any of the rental shops can give you quick directions to the Manatee locations.  You'll need to bring (or rent) your own mask, fins, snorkel, vest --and wet suit. While the clear spring fed waters are warm by ocean standards (72oF year round), it's still a bit cool for snorkeling.

Because manatees are protected under the law, you can not scuba dive with them. It is also unlawful to pursue the animal underwater, so you must wait for them to come to you. Depending on water temperatures and weather conditions, you could see one or as many as three hundred or more during your outing. Homosassa and the Crystal River are home to the largest numbers of wild manatee in the world in the winter. Crystal River provides a more natural, wild setting.

You are never too old or too young to experience this adventure.

Where to go, stay & eat.

Click HERE for a map of Florida with Crystal River marked. The Best Western Crystal River Resort is a reasonably priced hotel right on the water. They have a dive shop, boat tours and boat rentals on site. Picnic lunches are best when you're out snorkeling. For afterwards, Charlie's Fish House provides waterfront dining in downtown Crystal River (244 NW Hwy 19, ph 352-795-3949).

If you're headed towards Homosassa, two places on Suncoast Blvd are the Misty River Seafood House (4135 S Suncoast Blvd, Homosassa, ph 352-628-6288) and Riverside Buffet (4152 S Suncoast Blvd, Homosassa, ph 352-628-3435). For Chinese, try China First Buffet (601A SE Hwy 19, Save-a-Lot Shopping Center, Crystal River, ph 352-795-5445): on Friday and Saturday nights there's a Seafood Buffet.

What else can you do on this trip? Disneyworld, SeaWorld, MGM etc. in Orlando (90 miles East), Busch Gardens and Adventure Island Water Park in Tampa (80 miles South), and the Clearwater and St. Petersburg Beaches (95 miles South) are popular tourist attractions near Crystal River.  Besides these tourist favorites, you can book a guided fishing trip, fish on your own, or rent kayaks or canoes in the Crystal River area. About 10 miles away, the Florida State Wildlife Park rehabilitates injured manatees. The park is an educational and entertaining exhibit of all that is natural and wild in the area.

Bring a waterproof camera! While digital underwater cameras are available, film cameras still have the edge because of the wide range of available film speeds, greater flexibility and lower cost. Underwater, there's not a lot of light and what is there tends to be blue shifted, so a good indoor/outdoor film with a speed of at least ASA200 is needed. ASA400-ASA800 is preferred, although there is a trade-off when you make enlargements. Higher ASA usually means grainier enlargements. When you have the film developed, choose a processing lab that also gives you digital copies - either on a CD or by download on the web.

For quick, simple shots the Agfa Le Box Ocean #AGFWP (400ASA, 27 exposure) disposable (SRP $12.95, $8 web)) or the Kodak Waterproof Camera #KODWP (800ASA, 27 exposure) (SRP $12.95, $8 web) disposables let you take decent shots up to 15 feet deep. The Agfa has slightly better picture clarity, and the Kodak works better in low light.

Better still, if you can afford to buy or rent an underwater camera for your trip, you can really capture some great memories. Probably the best prosumer grade camera is the SeaLife SL560 (SRP $380, $290 web). The complete set is rated for 150' depth and includes 35mm U/W camera w/internal flash, high-power external flash, close-up color corrected lens, U/W filters and travel case.
